The Foghorn is a bold, refreshing cocktail that shows off the bright citrus notes of our Humdinger Citrus Gin. Balanced with the spice of ginger beer and a lift of fresh lime, it's a drink that works beautifully on a summer afternoon — or as an easy crowd-pleaser at a party.
Flavour Profile
Expect a lively kick of ginger with zesty lime and the citrus burst from our gin. It's crisp, slightly spicy and incredibly refreshing — a step up from your standard highball.
A Little History
The Foghorn is older than it looks. A "Fog Horn, Country Club Style" appears in Tom Bullock's The Ideal Bartender, published in 1917: Old Tom gin stirred with lime juice, lemon juice and a teaspoon of sugar, strained into a tall glass and topped with ginger ale. Bullock tended bar at the St. Louis Country Club, and his was the first known cocktail book by an African-American author.
That puts the Foghorn in print 24 years before the Moscow Mule, which dates from 1941. So it is less a gin twist on the Mule than its older cousin: gin, citrus and ginger in a tall glass, long before vodka got the copper mug.
Many modern recipes use a dry gin and ginger beer, which has more bite. Ours uses Citrus Gin, fresh lime and ginger beer.
Variations
- Ginger Ale Foghorn: Swap ginger beer for ginger ale for a softer spice and a smoother finish.
- Spicy Foghorn: Add a dash of ginger syrup or a thin slice of fresh chilli before stirring.
- Citrus Switch: Replace lime with grapefruit or lemon juice for a different citrus profile.
- Lighter Foghorn: Split the ginger beer with soda water (50/50) for a lighter serve.
- Barrel Foghorn: Use Humdinger Barrel Aged Gin for subtle vanilla and warm spice.
- Classic Dry: Make it with Humdinger Dry Gin for a cleaner, juniper-led style.
Serving Tip
Build over plenty of fresh ice in a tall highball. For extra aroma, express a strip of lime peel over the top before adding the wedge.
